Albums removed from streaming services

Greetings all – this is just a quick message to explain that Arx Atrata albums have been removed from streaming services, with no plans to return them.

This is primarily because streaming services simply do not provide fair payment to the musicians for the music they provide. Worse, over time these services have become even more hostile to musicians by employing ‘fake’ artists, allowing AI-generated music, and even refusing to pay out at all for tracks receiving fewer than 1000 plays.

This music was never written to be a commodity that someone receives as part of their subscription to a technology company. It was created both to be my personal musical expression and to give voice to the intangible connection between ancient history and the timelessness of nature. Each record is written over many hundreds of hours and at some financial expense as well. Receiving a $0.015 payment from a streaming service in return for someone playing the album in full is not just insufficient but insulting.

The music will continue to be available as digital downloads on Bandcamp and Ampwall, and potentially any other platforms that offer downloads for sale. The Bandcamp app also allows convenient streaming for those who have previously purchased downloads. But the days of this music being available as part of an all-you-can-eat buffet of musical ‘content’ are over.

‘A Reckoning’ official video

Today I am proud to share with you the video for the title track of the new album, “A Reckoning”.

The visuals follow the lyrics quite closely, and give a real insight into what the narrative behind the new record is all about. Thanks to Olga Kann (Facebook, YouTube) for once again handling the video duties.

This will be the last ‘single’ before the album gets released on July 5th – for that, the Arx Atrata Bandcamp page is the place to be:

Pre-orders for ‘A Reckoning’ are open

Greetings all – in case you missed it, the new record “A Reckoning” is due for release on July 5th, and pre-orders for the CD digipak and digital downloads are available on Bandcamp right now.

There is also the option of a bundle of the CD plus a t-shirt (in either mens or womens fit) with stunning artwork by Hester Aspland (below).

Please be aware that the album will not launch on streaming services on July 5th and will initially only be available as digital downloads or on CD, ensuring that fans are rewarded for their support by being the first to hear the record. As ever, thank you for that support, which is much appreciated.

“A Reckoning” – release date 5th July 2024

The long wait is over – today I’m proud to present the lyric video for “I Was A Witness To His Passing”, the first single from the forthcoming Arx Atrata album “A Reckoning”, due for release on July 5th 2024.

“I Was A Witness To His Passing” is the opening song from the new album and the lyrics tell a tale of both the futility of war and of the wider failings of humanity in our dealings with each other and our environment, rendered into video form by the talented hand of Olga Kann Art / Design.

The album “A Reckoning” is the first full-length record from Arx Atrata since 2019, and features over fifty minutes of melancholic black metal, mastered by the illustrious Greg Chandler at Priory Recording Studios.

Track listing:

1. To Sunder The World (instrumental)
2. I Was A Witness To His Passing
3. A Reckoning
4. Mercy Unearned
5. The Ruin Of My Past
6. The Witch
7. Our Dark Shadow

New interview

Soon, I will be able to share some information about the new album. But before then, here’s a recent interview which will hopefully be of interest. It’s been years since I last did an interview, so it was a pleasure to get the opportunity to speak about various topics from the influences behind the songs to the way the changes in the music industry affect my work. Read the whole thing at the link below.

No news is good news!

A new Arx Atrata album is nearing completion, but when – and indeed how – it will be released is yet to be determined.

Similarly, tentative enquiries about bringing this project to the live stage are ongoing, but I can make no promises yet. Potential collaborators and facilitators are encouraged to get in touch.

This winter will mark 10 years since the debut record was released and the plan is to see out 2023 in a way that celebrates and builds upon the work done to date. Watch this space.

Oblivion – eight years old

Cover to the album ‘Oblivion’

Yesterday marked 8 years since the debut album Oblivion was released. Originally it was intended as some sort of blackened doom project but arguably became ‘atmospheric black metal’. Initially it was just a single run of 100 digipaks, but high demand meant a second run of CDs followed, all of which sold out.

I’m grateful for the support that’s been shown over the last 8 years which has seen this project reach far more people than expected, despite no live shows or record label. Thanks to everyone who’s bought CDs, merch, or downloads over the years.

Succession – official video

I’m proud to present the official video for the track ‘Succession’. This live action video follows the path of the eponymous Warrior as he seeks his final revenge, and represents the events portrayed musically in The Warrior Cycle.

Directed and filmed by Tom at Ritual Video (Instagram: @ritual_video ) at locations in South Wales, the video “deftly captures the story that the song spun so wonderfully without words”.

Reviews for The Warrior Cycle

Thanks to everyone who supported The Warrior Cycle on Bandcamp. This was a slightly different release for Arx Atrata, being the only one without vocals (excluding the Arx Silvestris reworkings, of course) but reviews have been universally positive.

Ave Noctem“two fine musicians and storytellers weaving a tale without words” – 8.5/10

Occult Black Metal Zine “would recommend it to all fans of ambient, instrumental and post black and doom metal” – 8/10

The Razor’s Edge“this record stands apart like the breath of fresh air it truly is”

Fjordhammer“the coming together of two great expansive and atmospheric bands” – 3.5/5
